tlo, I guess my imagination is not up to it. Let's see...another fantasy with furry creatures,...another ghost story--perhaps a woman in red polka-dots instead of white, or another nazi thriller that makes you wonder how they lost the war. The whale story genre was kind'a used up in one go. I suppose you could have two old guys run away from their family responsibilities and escape down the Mississippi on a raft, but you'll have to tell me how they get around the locks and dam system without getting a ticket from the authorities for unsafe operation of a hazardous vessel and public endangerment. Of course you know the last cowboy was hit by a truck somewhere in New Mexico. And science fiction has been cancelled as a genre because all the good plots--like banning books because they are unsafe and twisting the language around so that words have lost their meaning have been taken up by the government as new law. I guess I just can't come up with a good alternative.

Um, Vince, if I may throw a damp squib in all this, did you ever stop to think that Poe's infernal invention of the story devoted entirely to crime and mystery might be one of factors in the decline of literature. Think about the thousands of books and stories that have been written in the last century and a half about nothing more significant than who dun it, or how dun it.
What if literature and readers had not been taken down that dark street, but had somehow stayed in the mainstream of fiction, what works might have been written.

Bad luck that. Well, can't wait to see the whole thing out on the market. Good luck ol chap. Keep the keyboards warm as they say.

That's a decision for the publisher, I'm afraid. In addition the HABITS OF THE HEART which I am posting as fast as I can format it correctly, I will be putting up KNOX BOOKS, 'a play in a bookshop,' very soon. Thanks.

I'm also looking forward to Hound-- and believe that more people are intrigued by the secret lives of booksellers than you might think.

Looking forward to the appearance of Hound! It sounds like a story worth telling -- and reading. (But I also would like to read the anti-adventure about the life of that book seller).
