It's possible they even knew of each other. Whenever I try to explain to friends why the replacement of books by other means is not something to be celebrated . . this is an intangible point which is hard to get across. You do it well. I look forward to finding a copy of his memoir myself. I certainly miss having more used bookshops around. But even more endangered than the bookstores are the true booksellers--it seems the clerks at most shops I visit don't know much beyond the bestseller list, and certainly wouldn't be able to make me an introduction to someone like Cyril P.
